In front of a live audience, Yogi Roth sat down with future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates as they talked about his journey and successes as a record-setting tight end for the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers. Gates never played a down of college football, but he was a star basketball player at Kent State University, leading his team to the 2002 Elite Eight and averaging over 20 points per game in his senior season. After being told he was too short to play in the NBA, Gates garnered the interest of 19 NFL teams, and the rest is history. The eight-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro is recognized as one of the best undrafted free agents in NFL history.
Gates describes how seeking trust, happiness and a “peace of mind” have been essential over the course of his career. Listen to the full episode to learn more about the journey and life lessons that took Gates from the basketball courts of Detroit to becoming the all-time leader in touchdown receptions among NFL tight ends.
